FRP grating is used in facilities where moisture and process chemicals make material selection important. MingChi lists water treatment, chemical processing and marine access among its applications. The next step for a buyer is to turn that broad application description into a clear record of the actual service conditions.
An application label such as “chemical plant” is a starting point. Resin selection and project approval need more specific information about what the grating will encounter and how it will be supported and used.
Record the exposure conditions
Prepare an exposure schedule with the process or maintenance team. Include routine operation, cleaning and reasonably foreseeable spills. Keep unknown values visible so that they can be resolved before approval.
For each relevant substance, record:
- Its chemical name or product identification and available safety data sheet.
- The concentration or dilution used at the installation.
- Normal and maximum expected service temperatures.
- Whether contact is occasional splash, repeated wetting, vapour exposure or immersion.
- The expected contact duration and cleaning procedure.
- Any mixtures or changes in process conditions that need separate review.
Send this information with the enquiry rather than reducing the exposure to a single pH value. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed resin system and document the basis of its suitability for the stated conditions.
Evaluate the specified resin system
MingChi lists polyester and vinyl ester resin options for its FRP grating. Those names identify resin families; the enquiry should establish which particular formulation and product configuration are being proposed.
Request current compatibility information for that selection, including any limitations. If a process chemical, temperature or cleaning method changes later, arrange another suitability review rather than assuming the original selection remains valid.
For a new process with incomplete exposure information, agree who will obtain the missing data and whether further product evaluation is required. Record the outcome with the approved project specification so that purchasing and maintenance teams can refer to the same information.
Review the walking surface and panel layout
Surface selection deserves its own discussion. MingChi offers gritted, concave and smooth finishes within its grating range. Describe how the walkway is used, the expected contamination and the cleaning method when asking which finish to quote.
Also identify drainage needs, openings and the route used by maintenance staff. Ask the project designer to review edge details and transitions between surfaces. An open-grid panel should be considered as part of the complete access arrangement, including supports and fixings.
Use the molded versus pultruded guide to compare construction options. Both molded grating and pultruded grating should be assessed against the actual support and load requirements.
Treat fire requirements as a separate selection input
Chemical exposure and fire performance require distinct review. Include any project-specific fire or smoke criteria in the enquiry and ask for documentation for the proposed product configuration.
Phenolic FRP grating may be considered where those requirements are relevant. MingChi’s product guidance describes it in terms of improved fire performance and explicitly makes classifications dependent on the construction and test documentation. A product family name is not a substitute for the evidence required by your project.
Carry the specification into operation
Keep the approved product identification, resin selection and installation drawings with the site maintenance records. Agree an inspection and cleaning plan appropriate to the service conditions. Record visible changes or damage and arrange a competent assessment where the condition of a panel is uncertain.
When ordering replacements, refer to the recorded specification and confirm whether the exposure or loading has changed. This is more useful than matching a panel only by colour or appearance.
The quotation checklist brings these inputs together. Send MingChi your exposure details and drawings to discuss a product selection for your project.
