Choosing between molded and pultruded FRP grating starts with the platform drawing. Where are the supports? What crosses the walkway? Which areas need removable panels or openings? Clear answers make it easier to compare products and give suppliers a useful basis for a quotation.
MingChi offers both constructions. Its molded grating range includes options for industrial access and wet processing areas, while its pultruded grating range provides a bearing-bar construction for projects with directional loading requirements. Final selection needs the load and span data for the exact panel being proposed.
Start with the layout
Mark each support line, panel edge and opening on a dimensioned plan. Include penetrations around pipes, equipment bases and columns. Record which panels need to be lifted for access and how that work will take place.
Molded grating is formed as an interconnected grid. Pultruded grating is assembled using structural bearing bars and cross members. That distinction matters when a designer evaluates panel orientation and cut-outs. Ask the supplier to show the load-bearing direction on the proposed layout rather than leaving the installer to infer it from a photograph.
Keep the drawing revision visible on both the enquiry and the quotation. A changed support arrangement can require another product review, even when the total floor area remains the same.
Compare against the same project conditions
Use a common checklist when reviewing the two options:
| Decision | Information to compare |
|---|---|
| Supports | Clear span, support locations, bearing detail and panel orientation |
| Loading | Required load type, load location and allowable deflection |
| Openings | Size, position and any additional support around cut-outs |
| Surface | Expected water, oil, footwear and cleaning conditions |
| Exposure | Chemicals, concentration, temperature and outdoor conditions |
| Installation | Panel handling, fixing layout and access for maintenance |
Request the applicable load table or design confirmation with each quotation. A thickness or mesh dimension alone does not establish whether a panel is suitable for your support arrangement. Make sure the engineering reviewer can connect the quoted product code to the supporting information.
Keep resin and surface selection in the comparison
The manufacturing method is only one part of the specification. MingChi lists polyester and vinyl ester resin options for its grating products, together with different surface finishes. Ask which particular resin and finish are included in each offer.
For chemical exposure, describe the actual operating conditions. A general reference to a chemical plant or a wastewater facility leaves important questions unanswered. Our guide to FRP grating in corrosive environments explains what to include in that review.
Where the project has fire or smoke criteria, include the required test method and acceptance criteria in the enquiry. Phenolic FRP grating is another option to evaluate. Its suitability still depends on the specified construction and relevant product documentation.
Review the complete supplied package
A useful comparison includes more than a price per square metre. Confirm which panels are supplied cut to size, how openings are shown, whether fixing clips are included, and how the pieces will be identified on arrival. Ask the supplier to list exclusions so that site work can be planned accurately.
If a project involves concentrated or equipment loads, include them explicitly and review the heavy-duty grating options with the supplier. The product name alone should never replace a load assessment.
Prepare a clear enquiry
Use the FRP grating specification checklist to assemble your drawing, quantities and operating conditions. Then send MingChi your project requirements and request a comparison tied to the same revision of the specification. This gives the buyer, designer and supplier a shared reference for approving the final selection.
